The HELIOT EMIL Autumn Winter 21 collection titled ‘Unstable Equilibrium’ explores an interpretation of the difference between states of equilibrium. There are two points where a physical object can balance: Stable or Unstable. There is no in between. Within this explanation of basic physics lies an interesting parallel to our current global situation. Instead of accepting our current state as a new balance point - it seems as if most of society is waiting for things to stabilize as we are currently in an unstable point of equilibrium.
For this collection designer Julius Juul wanted to explore the state of balance in between stable and unstable. Is it possible to make something appear unstable while being stable. Is it possible to find a perfect balance in asymmetry? Can we challenge traditional shapes or can we modify items to be worn both in and out of balance? These questions were part of the development process of the AW21 collection. All items in the collection have been designed to confront this balance. Resulting in experiments like asymmetrical down quilting, curved zippers, asymmetrical layered knitwear, modifiable layering which makes it possible to wear the garments in multiple ways and much more.
Constructing with the familiar HELIOT EMIL silhouettes, designer Julius Juul continues the constant narrative of exploring a balance between form and function with each garment design.
